1️⃣ What is iMovie?

iMovie is a free video editing application made by Apple for Mac, iPhone, and iPad. It includes a range of video effects and tools, and is designed to be easy to use for beginners.

2️⃣ Starting a New Project (First Time on Mac)

When you open iMovie for the first time, it opens in Projects view.

To start a new movie project:

  1. Click Create New
  2. Choose Movie

3️⃣ Import Media into iMovie

  1. Click Import Media
  2. Select the folder that contains your media files
  3. Import the photos/videos into iMovie

4️⃣ Drag Clips to the Timeline

Drag a clip from the media browser into the timeline to begin editing your video.

5️⃣ Add Titles

You can add titles in two ways:

  • 📄Add a title as a single clip (a separate title clip)
  • 🎞️Add a title on top of an existing video clip

6️⃣ Add Transitions

Transitions make the change between two clips smoother (e.g. fade, dissolve, etc.).

How to add: Drag a transition and place it between two clips on the timeline.

7️⃣ Add Background Music

You can add sound effects or music to your movie:

  • iMovie provides an audio library (sound effects/music)
  • You can also use audio from your Music library
  • Choose suitable background music and trim it to match the length of the video

8️⃣ Apply the Ken Burns Effect

The Ken Burns effect is a panning and zooming effect used in film and video production.

  • Apply the effect to a clip
  • Adjust the start frame and end frame to control the zoom/pan

9️⃣ Export a Movie

  1. Click the Share button (top right corner of iMovie)
  2. Choose Export File
  3. Select a suitable resolution and quality, then click Next
  4. Choose the file destination, rename the file if needed, and click Save
